Four Things Not To Say At Work
There is nothing wrong with being comfortable around your boss and being able to speak your mind. However, you must remember that there is always a line that can be crossed and that you must always be careful of. There are many of us who will get too comfortable and will start blurting things out to our boss that will make us look incompetent. Here are four important conversation pieces and statements to avoid.
1. “I’ll Have To Get Back To You On That.”
You should always be prepared. If your boss gave you an assignment two hours ago and you still haven’t done anything about it than you will look like you don’t care and you procrastinate on the important things. You don’t want him to regret giving you an important assignment. Instead get on it right away and do whatever you can to make sure that it is done properly within an appropriate time frame. Even if you haven’t finished it when he asks you can at least give him a progress report and let him know what you have done.
2. Complaining On The Job
Do not talk about the ‘rules and regulations’ that are set up by the company to your boss’s face. In fact we recommend that you don’t speak of it to anyone (including employees) because people can talk. No boss wants to hear their employees complaining. If you hate the rules that bad than you need to find a new job.
3. Leave The Jokes At Home.
Remember that giving a presentation is a professional job and could earn you rewards in the future. You want to be prepared and speak with confidence. Yet, you don’t want to be too confident. Some people will start off a presentation with a joke. This isn’t always funny to people and should be avoided. The best thing you can do is to know who you are up against and what they like and don’t like. Also keep in mind that your boss is usually watching and scrutinizing everything.
4. “That Can’t Be Done.”
No one wants to hear that something he deems important is impossible. While these tasks may seem impossible at times you always need to find a way around them and figure something out. Telling your boss that it is too late to make any changes or other excuses will only get you in the dog house. Tell them ok and find a way to do it as quickly and efficiently as you can. Don’t be in the mindset that you can’t do it even though you already said yes. Where there’s a will there’s a way.
