Becoming a police officer is a noble profession – but one that should not be entered into lightly. Those who work to become one must undergo grueling tests. The training for a man or woman is challenging and can take quite a long time for those trying to work their way up. To be accepted you first must go through mental, physical, and educational tests.
Before entering you first need to fully understand what you are getting yourself into. Research all of the different procedures, tests, and training exercises that you must go through. Also understand the hard decisions that you will have to make throughout your career and the dangers that might be involved in it.
There are several different types of police officers. Find out which type is something that you could do and enjoy. Than check to see what prerequisites they have. Many police departments will require you to be of a certain age in order to have the experience required. Some even require a college degree.
Prepare your body and your mind for the intense mental and physical tests. In order to be a police officer you must have high levels of mental capabilities and be very healthy. They want to make sure that you can handle stressful situations.
Next you will have to train. Police departments usually require 12 – 14 weeks for training at the academy. In this career you will learn the different state, constitutional laws and accident investigation.
